Samoa News Eighteen supervisors and chiefs at ASG’s Department of

Human Resources completed on Thursday a two-day training aimed at enhancing their skills in the management of people and resources, as the department looks to maximize its resources in the face of possible budget cuts.

Supervisors from the numerous divisions of DHR — administration; finance; personnel; workmen’s compensation and equal employment opportunity; human capital; Workforce Investment Act (WIA); Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) and National Emergency Grant (NEG) — received certificates for completing the training conducted by Small Business Development Center Executive Director Herbert Thweatt.

“The training we had today was supervisor management training that covered 11 chapters of information,” Thweatt explained. The training was held at the DHR conference room at the A.P. Lutali Executive Office Building in Utulei.

“What I hope it does is to help them be better supervisors, managers and leaders and help to also train their own team and staff better,” Thweatt said. “Communication was one of the most important aspects of the training— with your boss, employees ... the number one thing about communication is listening ... I hope they have learned to listen better.”

DHR Director Evelyn Vaitautolu Langford told Samoa News that she is hopeful the training experience has assisted her supervisors in time management, how to lead, how to motivate, how to accept change when it is required.

“For us at HR it is really important this year ... to maximize our resources,” Vaitautolu Langford said. “We will be implementing programs and systems so we want to be able to effectively manage our people and resources, especially with budget cuts.”
